Good Day Care Hygiene Practices

Good hygiene is vital in a child care facility both on the part of the staff and the children.  Your policies, cleaning and daily routines should include strict guidelines for good hygiene.

Ensure you include hygiene training in all staff inductions.  Have step by step instructions on hygiene practice in every room so there is no gray area  i.e:

* food handling in the kitchen
*  diaper changing procedure
*  serving food in the classrooms
*  dealing with accidents
* staff washing hands after toileting

Incorporate good hygiene practice into the children’s daily routines.  Make sure they wash hands after going to the toilet.  Religiously stick to a handwashing routine before all food, after coming in from the playground, after a diaper change.

Have cleaning routines for all the rooms ensuring that everything is well sanitised including the toys.  Post the cleaning checklist on the wall and have staff initial when tasks are completed.
